Guest Editors & Writers

The Lancashire Writing Hub aims to deliver a dynamic resource, events, and development programme for North West writers, both professional and emergent, and our Guest Editor placements offer a great developmental opportunity to writers and editors keen to enhance their skills and their professional development.

Our Guest Editors are encouraged to make their mark in the North West writing scene!

The Lancashire Writing Hub Guest Editor role covers everything from news and events articles, publishing new resources and opportunities on the site, managing the administration of the site, scheduling in the new submissions for the Your Writing pages, and commissioning new articles as well as writing their own new reviews and interviews for publication on the site.

Pretend Boss of the LWH website for May – Kim McGowan

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

This month I am editing the LWH website.  Because it is Preston Guild year I have invited writers I admire to be creative on the theme of place. Any place, it doesn’t have to be Preston (although they get an additional eleventy million pounds added to their fee if they mention Preston).  My contributors are Sarah-Clare Conlon, Dave Hartley, Pete Hartley, Richard Hirst, Ben Judge, Clare Massey & Trev Meaney.  I think it is accurate to say that these are all people I know because of our shared compulsion to say rude words in public. What…? How do you choose your friends?

Pretend Boss & granddaughter Florence

To be fair my first contribution is from Pete Hartley and Pete might not feel compelled to say rude things in public but his writing is fabulous and he still lives in Preston so I am prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Blackpool’s Dead Good Poets started at Blackpool Fylde  College in 2009. The group hosts regular open mic nights, school workshops and fancy dress events. They blog every week at http://deadgoodpoets.blogspot.co.uk/ and are reet chuffed at editing the LWH in April.

During their tenure, our intreprid poets with Vicky at the helm were responsible for managing all copy on the Lancashire Writing Hub website as well as contributing their own articles, and it has been a pleasure working with such an enthusiastic and talented group of writers. They published a total of 62 articles of all shapes and sizes during their tenure, 27 of which were News items, and 8 longer articles including interviews, reviews, and discussions about writing, 4 of which were penned by themselves. We would also like to congratulate the Dead Good Poets for their shortlisting in the  Radio Wave Culture and Lifestyle awards for the Website of the Year Award.

Guest Editor – Mikey Goddard

Thursday, March 1st, 2012

The Lancashire Writing Hub Guest Editor for March 2012 – Mikey Goddard. Mikey was responsible for managing the website and all copy during the whole of March – and even went above and beyond the call of duty to hold the fort as there was a few days delay in the March to April changeover. It turned out to be an exceptionally busy month for the LWH website, and Mikey handled it like a true professional.

As well as contributing his own articles, Mikey undertook the role as Guest Editor as part of his broader 3 month volunteer work placement with the Lancashire Writing Hub to meet part of his MA in Creative Writing at the University of Bolton. We were really looking forward to working with Mikey – who seems to know EVERYONE! Mikey works as a social worker in Bolton. He lives in Preston with his wife Tabby and their small dog Lottie. Mikey is currently working towards an MA in Creative Writing which he is really enjoying. ‘I’m really looking forward to getting to grips with editing the website and reading through everyone’s amazing submissions, interviews and reviews. Thankfully I will have Jane beside me so will not be breaking the internet (at least, not on purpose) just yet. I will be adding a few of my own articles as well!

~

During his Guest Editorship, Mikey managed the LWH website for just over 5 weeks, publishing a total of 88 articles in an exceptionallly busy month. These included writing 5 of his own articles, including interviews and reviews, and publishing 3 articles commissioned from volunteer copywriters, as well as sourcing and publishing 28 other news and opportunities articles. Mikey also moderated and scheduled in 51 submissions to the Your Writing pages and a multitude of contributors comments, and was an all round fantastic Guest Editor. He has been professional and thorough throughout, and nothing fazed him as he handled everything we threw his way with aplomb. Thanks Mikey for a fabulous LWH Guest Editorship!

Guest Editor – Kim Chamberlain

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

Our Guest Editor for February 2012 was Kim Chamberlain.

Kim has been a volunteer copywriter for the Hub for just a couple of months and expressed interest in the Guest Editor role, so when the February Guest Editor-to-be had to pull out due to work commitments, we asked Kim and she jumped at the chance.

Kim was our 3rd Guest Editor and is particularly interested in non-fiction writing, having already submitted interviews with a ghost writer and a non-fiction writer to the website in January.

During her Guest Editor placement, Kim was responsible for managing all copy on the Lancashire Writing Hub website, including the submissions to our “Your Writing” pages, as well as contributing her own articles.

“Hi, I’m Kim Chamberlain and I’m a writer, speaker, trainer … and chocaholic. I mainly write non-fiction books, e-books, articles, newsletters, blogs and a daily email service. My topics include Communication; Inspiration; Personal development; and Brain training, games & puzzles.

Some of my work can be found on: http://www.successfulspeaking.biz/products/

and http://www.successfulspeaking.biz/newsletters/

Kim Chamberlain’s Guest Editor placement has been a truly professional one. Given that Kim had no advance notice of her placement as we had a last minute cancellation, she really hit the ground running, and was pro-active in sourcing new material and in asking contacts and the broader LWH community for contributions from the start. During her Guest Editorship with the Lancashire Writing Hub, Kim published 50 articles on the website, including 20 news or opportunities articles, 6 of which were book reviews, interviews with writers from various genres, or articles of interest to writers, and 3 of these were written by Kim herself during her tenure. 30 contributions from other writers were also scheduled in for publication on the LWH “Your Writing” pages.

Our first Guest Editor for 2012 – Claire Sharples.

Claire has been a volunteer article copywriter for the Hub website, and was looking forward to the challenge of the Guest Editor placement. She was our first Guest Editor of 2012, her placement running for the whole of January, during which time she was responsible for managing all copy on the Lancashire Writing Hub website as well as contributing her own articles.

She said: “I’m really excited to be taking on this role and I hope to meet the hub’s expectations.  I’ve already been working my way through a back log of submissions and it’s a task I’m really enjoying.  Keep up the creativity!”

Claire has started a new blog on WordPress at http://csharples.wordpress.com where you can read samples of her writing.  She prefers to write fiction and is hoping to publish her writing on her new blog over the next few months.

Claire got 2012 off to a cracking start as the first Guest Editor of the year, and our second ever Guest Editor for the LWH website. She handled the role professionally and with enthusiasm, publishing 20 articles, including News and Opportunities articles and several reviews & interviews commissioned by our team of volunteer copywriters, proof-reading and scheduling in a large number of submissions to the “Your Writing” pages, and writing 3 of her own articles to boot. All in the space of just one month.
