Creating Character

A three hour workshop aimed at short story and novel writers. Working with an experienced tutor in a friendly group, try writing prompts and brain storming games, discussion and group work to help you get to know your characters. Learn how action and plot come from character, how to use a secret or a lie to build a character’s backstory, the pitfalls of taking characters from your own life and practical tips on revealing character through dialogue, action and description.

The workshop costs £30.00 for the full three hours, including refreshments, or £20 concessions. It is running at The Chapel Gallery, St. Helen’s road, Ormskirk L39 4QR, which has good public transport links and is easily accessible by car from surrounding towns and cities.

Jenn Ashworth is the Preston novelist of A Kind of Intimacy, short-listed for the Guardian’s Not The Booker Prize and a Waterstones New Voices choice, and is a short story writer and award-winning blogger. Her first novel, A Kind of Intimacy was also short-listed for the Guardian’s Not The Booker Prize and Jenn recently won a Betty Trask award. Her blog won Best Writing on a Blog at the Manchester blog awards and was short-listed for the Completely Novel blogging awards.

As well as writing, Jenn also teaches creative writing and blogging in a variety of settings, and works as a freelance editor.               Jenn Ashworth.
